Should I really bother with a flu shot?

May 2, 2019

Absolutely! Lots of people still consider Influenza, or “the flu” to be unpleasant but relatively harmless disease. But the truth is, flu is a serious illness and can lead to hospitalization, or even death. Between 6000 and 11000 South Africans die of flu related complications every year. Getting the flu shot doesn’t eliminate the possibility of getting the flu, but it does reduce your risk dramatically.

Flu season is just around the corner, so the sooner you act, the better. Not just for your own health – but for the well-being of your loved ones. The flu shot doesn’t just protect you – it also protects the vulnerable people around you. Flu is
especially dangerous to the immune-compromised, people over 65, babies and toddlers, pregnant women, people with asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and those with cancer. If everyone around the vulnerable is immunised, it greatly reduces their risk of infection – a concept known as
herd immunity.

The flu shot is inexpensive, readily available, and takes just a few seconds to administer. Getting the whole
family immunised only takes a few minutes, and you’ll be protected for the flu season.

So yes! You really should bother with the flu shot!
